Marine Mecca

Experience the Fraser Coast Marine Mecca

With one of Australia’s best climates, mild winters, warm waters and plenty of sunshine, anytime is a great time of year to experience our Marine Mecca here on the Fraser Coast. Home to World Heritage-listed natural gems, unique diving experiences, safe and secluded beaches, and the number one place to watch humpback whales play, the Fraser Coast is located around 250 kilometres north of Queensland’s capital Brisbane.

The Fraser Coast spans a spectacular coastal and hinterland landscape that includes the world’s largest sand island, K’gari (Fraser Island), coral cay Lady Elliot Island, a popular favourite Rainbow Beach, the whale-watching capital Hervey Bay, and the city of Maryborough with its fascinating military history all ready to be discovered. With direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, it’s easy to pack your swimmers and get out on the water for adventure or relaxation all year round!

Whale Watching (July - October)

There is no place like Hervey Bay for incredible up close and personal encounters with majestic humpback whales. The world’s first Whale Heritage Site, Hervey Bay is scientifically recognized as a rare stopover site for migrating humpback whales, making it an eco-experience uniquely different from any other whale watching destination along the east coast of Australia (and the world). These intelligent and inquisitive creatures utilise the calm, subtropical waters of Platypus Bay to rest, relax and nurse their young, before heading back to their feeding grounds in Antarctica for summer.

With a fleet of specially designed vessels offering eco-certified, intimate encounters during the annual season between July and November you can have an up-close encounter with these incredible creatures that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Aquatic adventure

K’gari Salty Safaris offer small group marine tours cruising the World Heritage site of western K’gari (Fraser Island) and the Great Sandy Strait. Offering two main tours, ‘Island Hopper’ and ‘Funset’, you will experience the best of the Bay with beautiful scenery, wildlife and exhilaration as you cruise from hotspot to hotspot.

On the Island Hopper, be amazed by the swirling white silica sands, coloured sand cliffs and the crystal clear waters in the northern Great Sandy Marine Park, into Platypus Bay on the western side of the world’s largest sand island, K’gari (Fraser Island). Explore the wonders by making a splash and snorkelling the pristine waters amongst vibrant marine life and enjoy some beach activities. For your chance to see Hervey Bay’s Humpback Whales in one of the world’s first Whale Heritage Sites, travel between mid July- mid October.

Funset offers a fun, unique way to enjoy the magic of a sunset across the ocean. Music on, drinks cold, remote island stopover, incredible views, with a little bit of an exhilaration as you go from thrill to chill.
