Sitting 1.3km from Hervey Bay’s Urangan Boat Harbour, Round island, also known as Weenandin by the Butchulla, is recorded as the place of first contact in 1799 between Europeans on passing ships and the traditional landowners. This 100m wide island is almost surrounded by a rocky reef which can be explored by foot at low tide or snorkelling at high water. Pack a picnic and enjoy land-based fishing on the reef, targeting flathead, cod and tusk fish. Migratory seabirds nest on the island in season.
