The Fraser Coast is a Mecca for Divers

The Fraser Coast, located on the eastern coast of Australia, is a mecca for diving enthusiasts looking for an unforgettable underwater adventure. With an abundance of marine life, crystal clear waters, and stunning reefs and wrecks, the region offers a unique diving experience that is sure to impress even the most seasoned divers. The Fraser Coast has many diving locations; however, the two most iconic diving locations are the ex-HMAS Tobruk and Lady Elliot Island.

ex-HMAS Tobruk

The ex-HMAS Tobruk is a former Australian Navy ship that was decommissioned in 2015 and subsequently scuttled in 2018. It is now an artificial reef and dive site that has quickly become one of the most popular attractions for divers in the Fraser Coast. The Tobruk is located approximately 25 kilometers off the coast of Hervey Bay and is easily accessible by boat.

Diving the ex-HMAS Tobruk is an experience like no other. The ship is home to an array of marine life, including schools of fish, giant gropers, and sea turtles. The Tobruk is also covered in colorful corals and sponges, making it a haven for macro photography enthusiasts. The ship is situated in 28 meters of water, so it is recommended that divers have advanced diving certification before attempting to explore the wreck.

Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island, located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, is a paradise for divers, especially those interested in experiencing the rich and diverse marine life that thrives in this part of the world. The island is home to one of the most iconic diving sites in the world, the Diving Lady, a bronze statue of a woman diving that stands at the entrance of the dive site. The statue, which was installed in 1963, has become an emblematic symbol of the island and a popular attraction for divers.

The diving experience at Lady Elliot Island is second to none, with crystal clear waters and an abundance of marine life, including turtles, manta rays, sharks, and vibrant corals. The island’s location at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef ensures that the waters are rich in nutrients, attracting a wide variety of marine creatures. Divers can explore the shallow reefs or venture deeper into the blue to discover the island’s underwater treasures. Whether you are a seasoned diver or a beginner, Lady Elliot Island offers a unique and unforgettable diving experience that is sure to leave you in awe of the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

The reefs of the Fraser Coast are also home to an abundance of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter schools of colourful fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, and clownfish. The reefs are also home to a variety of larger marine life, including manta rays, sharks, and even humpback whales during the migration season.
