Welcome to paradise. Lake McKenzie, one of the most visited natural wonders in Australia and a must-do on any #FraserIsland bucket list. Referred to as Boorangoora (meaning waters of wisdom) by traditional owners of the land, the Butchulla people, Lake McKenzie’s famous turquoise swirls have earned it the title of jewel of the island.
The safe, calm waters of the lake make it the perfect place for the little ones to play, and the high natural acidity levels make it virtually impossible for most plant and fish life to flourish – making it truly one of the most spectacular and relaxing swimming spots one could ask for!
This little gem is accessible by 4WD on the inland tracks (about 5-6km drive from Central Station), and is a popular day-spot for tour groups. You can also access this tranquil spot by foot, on one of the hiking trails on the island – including a return-loop from Kingfisher Bay Resort and the Fraser Island Great Walk.

There are three types of lakes on the island; window lakes (e.g. Ocean Lake), barrage lakes (e.g. Lake Wabby) and perched lakes (Lake McKenzie). Being a ‘perched’ lake, Lake McKenzie contains only rainwater, and is not fed by creeks and natural springs. Instead, organic matter buildup that naturally forms at the bottom of the lake acts like a basin, and gives Lake McKenzie the illusion of a beautiful swimming pool.
The sand here is pure, white silica (the same stuff you’ll find in the Whitsunday Islands) and is not only beautiful to look at but beautifully soft to walk on. The sand also acts as a natural filter, leaving those crystal clear waters to frolic the afternoon away. Did someone say vacation time?

Humpback whale fact: A whale's tail is called its flukes! A whale's tail is composed of two lobes, each of which is called a fluke. The pattern on whale flukes are completely unique to that individual whale, like fingerprints are to humans! 🐳☀️

🐳Are orcas dolphins or whales?🐬⠀
Despite being called killer whales, orcas actually belong to the dolphin family Delphinidae. They’re the only species in their genus, but their closest relatives are dolphin species from around Australia and South East Asia like the Irrawaddy dolphin.⠀
So orcas are dolphins not whales.⠀

Whale would you look at this beautiful fella! Each year, like clockwork, these marine mammals undertake a 5,000km annual migration from Antarctica to have a babymoon followed by a pitstop in #HerveyBay where they have their baby calves in Queensland’s warm waters! Have you locked eyes with these gentle giants during their annual migration along the Queensland coastline? ✨ Tap the link in our bio to find out where you can go #whalewatching in Queensland! #thisisqueensland by photosbyfarr, whalesinparadise & sunnydayswithcara #whalesherveybay #visitfrasercoast
So stoked and proud to announce I'll be skippering for pacificwhaleoz this whale season!
Bring on the season! 💙🐳

Just some of today’s magic. 🤩
.
Headed out with tasmanventure on their new boat, Pure Dive, for the Remote Fraser and Whale Experience tour this morning and we were greeted with gorgeous glassy conditions! 😍😍
.
Overall the whales were generally quiet, as calm as the water’s surface, but we were lucky to get a few breaches plus a whooooole lotta pec fin slapping and tail lobbing. 👏
.
We also had the opportunity to snorkel earlier in the morning (my first time with turtles! 😁) and then there were the visits to the west coast of K’gari (Fraser Island)... which just looked absolutely stunning in today’s picture perfect queensland winter weather. 💙
.
My tour tomorrow has been cancelled due to weather so I’m going to take the opportunity to a) sleep in and b) edit some more photos and videos!
.
Hope you’re all having a wonderful week! ✌️

BOOM! 💥
.
That’s the sound of 35+ tonnes of marine mammal hitting the water after a breach. 😱
.
It’s also the sound of my mind being blown... 🤯 2000 IG followers and friends! 😮 Honestly was starting to wonder if that would ever happen but it did. 🙏🥰
.
Big thank you to ALL OF YOU for your support, whether you’ve been here since the beginning or you’ve only just started following me. I appreciate it. A LOT. 🤗
.
Okay, enough mushy stuff! There’s good stuff coming very very soon. One I can’t tell you about - YET - but I’m super excited about it. The other is that I’ll be holding a comp/giveaway for one of my prints to celebrate hitting 2K on IG. Details will be in my stories in the next few days, so keep your 👀 peeled!
.
Can I just say TGIF tomorrow?! Hands up if you’re ready for this week to be over! 🙋🏻♀️
.
This beautiful breacher was snapped while out with tasmanventure last month. (That hurts me, in my soul, that it’s already “last month”. 😩 No I am NOT being dramatic. 😝)
