Discover Where Wonder Surfaces on the Fraser Coast this winter and explore these unforgettable K’gari/Fraser Island experiences for yourself. Explore the world’s largest sand island and UNESCO World Heritage-Listed attraction at your own pace. From 4WD adventures to whale watching expeditions and awe-inducing freshwater swimming spots, come feel what surfaces on the Fraser Coast this whale watching season.

Float Down Eli Creek

Take advantage of the Fraser Coast’s warm winter days and grab your floaty (inflatable tube recommended) and make way to Eli Creek, the largest freshwater creek on the eastern side of K’gari. Flowing at around 80 million litres of freshwaters per day from inland sand dunes direct to 75 Mile Beach, the crystal clear waters and slow current provide a natural ‘lazy river’ for visitors to float down.

To access, park at the Eli Creek boardwalk car park, walk the boardwalk inland (approx. 400m) and enter at the top of the creek. The journey takes approximately 10 – 20 minutes so lie back, relax and take in the beautiful, natural surroundings.

Visit Australia’s Whale Watching Capital

From July – October, migrating humpback whales travel along Australia’s east coast, stopping at the Fraser Coast for several days to rest, socialise and nurse their calves. Because of this, the Fraser Coast has been named the world’s first Whale Heritage Site and is known as Australia’s whale watching capital.

On K’gari, whales can be spotted breaching along the horizon from all around the island. For a more upclose and personal experience, there are several whale watching tours operating around the island with many offering guaranteed whale sightings throughout whale watching season. Seeking more adventure? Pop on your wetsuit, grab your snorkeling gear and get in the water with the whales on a swim with whales experience.

Dive into Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)

Almost as iconic as K’gari itself, Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is the perfect spot to set up for a day in the sun. Fed only by rainwater and with pure silica sand so fine it acts as a natural filter system, this perched lake offers some of the bluest and clearest water in the world. Surrounded by native eucalyptus forest and set in the UNESCO World heritage area of the Great Sandy region, Lake McKenzie is a scenic spot for a picnic, refreshing swim or day laying on the sand with a good book.

Access Lake McKenzie via the Central Lakes scenic drive, parking at the designated day use car park then take the short, sandy pathway leading to the water.

Breathtaking Walks & Multi-Day Hikes

Naturally beautiful and unspoilt, K’gari is begging to be explored and what better way than to take to one of the many trails on the island. From short, family-friendly strolls to spectacular multi-day hikes worth planning a trip around, there’s an unforgettable experience on K’gari for every adventure seeker.

Crossing through the middle of the island, the K’gari Great Walk is approximately 90km one-way, taking most hikers 6 – 8 days. Spectacular in its scenery, the Grade 4 hike takes walkers through subtropical rainforest, coastal heath, giant sand blow and eucalyptus forest, passing famous sites including Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek. A challenging but unforgettable experience for those up to the challenge.

If a 90km hike seems like a bit too much for you, there are several shorter walks on K’gari offering breathtaking scenery. For families, try Wanggoolba Creek Boardwalk, only 700m and taking around 30 minutes, this lush, shaded rainforest walk runs alongside a crystal clear creek and is one of the most accessible walks on K’gari. For more of a challenge, Lake Wabby Walk is 3.1km return from the carpark taking roughly 1 – 1.5 hours. Here you’ll walk across the Hammerstone Sandblow to K’gari’s deepest lake, making sure you stop for a photo at this iconic spot. Whether you’re on K’gari for a day or a week, there’s so many walks to explore, all offering a different perspective of the island’s landscape.

Uncover the SS Maheno Wreck

Uncover a unique piece of history half buried in the sands on the eastern side of K’gari. Located on 75 Mile Beach, a popular stretch for 4WD adventures, SS Maheno Wreck is a remarkable landmark. The ship is approximately 122 metres long, washing up on the beach in 1935 after a cyclone snapped the towline and the ship drifted onto K’gari. The wreck has now been sitting on the beach for more than 90 years and is an unforgettable site.

Explore by 4WD

For the ultimate K’gari/Fraser Island experience, exploring by 4WD is a must. K’gari is the largest sand island in the world and has no sealed roads, making it a bucket list destination for 4WD travellers. 75 Mile Beach acts as a highway, complete with speed limits and aircraft landing zones, while inland 4WD tracks connect popular spots like Lake McKenzie and Eli Creek. While there are ways to explore the island by foot, it’s experienced best in a high-clearance 4WD, which allows access to its remote lakes, beaches and rainforest.

Ferry your own ride over on the barge, hire a 4WD or make life carefree and book an organised 4WD tour. First time? Be prepared and do your research before visiting. Driving times are tide dependent.

Sail K’gari

Take in K’gari from a new perspective, by sailboat. The western side of K’gari faces the Great Sandy Strait, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with calm, sheltered waters ideal for sailing. The Strait is rich in flora and fauna known for mangroves, sand flats and abundant wildlife. Dolphins, dugongs and turtles are commonly spotted year-round by sailers, while whale watching season (July – October) provides spectacular whale encounters for those out on the water. Hire a sailboat and stay on the calm, blue waters overnight, or leave the rigging to the professionals and hop aboard a day cruise or sunset sail. Round out your K’gari/Fraser Island experiences on the water.
