Maryborough

Nineteenth century guides spinning yarns of traders and new settlers, spine tingling tours of haunted historic sites, steam train rides, a time cannon fired on city streets and a unique connection to Mary Poppins. The city of Maryborough is full of surprises.

Walk beautifully preserved colonial streets once the home of merchant banks and opium dens, and soak up the history and heritage architecture of what was once one was one of Australia’s largest and busiest ports. Settled in 1847, Maryborough's fascinating past is easily recognisable in its gloriously preserved colonial architecture, magnificent riverside parks, heritage characters, unique events and quirky heritage tours.

The original wharf district is now an exceptional heritage precinct called Portside, where stately colonial buildings have been lovingly reinvented as pubs, restaurants and museums and art gallery.  Portside was voted as one of the top "Must Do" experiences in Queensland.

With these glorious streetscapes as the setting – and just a spoonful of imagination - and you can also jump right into the magical world of Mary Poppins in Maryborough.  Mary Poppins is the famous, fictional creation of Pamela Lyndon Travers, who was born above a bank building in Maryborough in 1899. See the heritage-listed former bank building where she was born, have your picture taken with a life-sized bronze statue of the world’s most famous nanny and see striking public art which explores the themes of her novels.

A must in Maryborough is a visit to its famous weekly market. Every Thursday the city centre transforms into a bustling outdoor market with a great variety of art, craft, fresh produce and plants. The last weekend of the month is a great time to visit Maryborough. On Saturday night, be swept up in spine-tingling tales of the paranormal on a Ghost Tour of the city’s haunted and historic sites. Follow it up with Sunday in the Park – a lazy Sunday morning of fun, food, brass bands, steam train rides and river cruises. With such a rich past, it is no surprise that Maryborough offers visitors the chance to explore an impressive number of first class museums and historic collections.
