Pioneer Park was to be the site of a massive camp at Tinana in 1942. Concrete was poured, canvas buildings erected and 40kms of roads built. A hospital was also constructed capable of accommodating 500 beds. Despite all this work, the American soldiers who were to use the site were sent elsewhere when Allied advances in the war resulted in the reallocation of military resources to the north of Australia. When the US 27th Division did not arrive in Queensland, the Tinana construction was reprioritised again and the camp was not finished until January 1944. By then it was largely redundant. Concrete footings are mostly all that remains of this once-extensive camp.
