Learn about the Fraser Coast Military Trail

The Fraser Commando School was a World War II training camp for Australian commandos. The commandos lived and trained on the island and practised covert operations at various locations in the Fraser Coast. The training prepared the men for deadly missions behind Japanese lines in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Amazingly, a cameraman was on hand to film the commandoes training on Fraser Island during the war. What was even more surprising is the footage is in colour. But the footage remained all but forgotten for 70 years. The cameraman was Dr Frank Tate, an amateur photographer and cameraman. He was well-known by World War II for a colour film he made about the Great Barrier Reef. He became an accredited army photographer during the war and he was invited to film the commandoes training at the Fraser Commando School. His film provides a rare glimpse into the training methods of the commandos.
