Accessing Fraser Island
Fraser Island is accessible by 4WD vehicles only. As all roads on the island are sand tracks, 4WDs require reasonable under-vehicle clearance. You can take your own vehicle or hire one from Hervey Bay, Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village, Brisbane and Rainbow Beach. Off-road campers are allowed, however caravans are discouraged.
One, two and three-day escorted 4WD tours depart daily from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. Tours also depart from major accommodation resorts on Fraser Island.
Air charters and transfers to Fraser Island depart from Hervey Bay Airport. Fixed-wing aircraft can land on grass airstrips located across the island, or they can land on 75 Mile Beach at Happy Valley and Eurong. Helicopters can land at designated helipads around the island. All air charters and transfers should be pre-booked.
Fraser Island ferry and barge services, both vehicle and passenger,operate from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach dailyto various points on Fraser Island. Private boats can moor off the island with tender transfers to land, or there are jetty facilities dotted around the island.
