There’s No Place Like Home: Why Dan & Steph Couldn’t Wait to Return Home

Dan and Steph on the Fraser Coast

You know that old saying, ‘you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl?’ Well, that’s kind of how Dan & Steph felt when they packed their bags and headed back to the big smoke for the chance to be crowned the first dual winners in My Kitchen Rules history. Of course who they missed more than anything was Emmy, but also the daily joys of home.

Locals will know the sorts of things we’re talking about… Waking up to the sounds of silence and birds chirping, the ocean lightly rolling in and the soft sun rising so elegantly over K’gari, Fraser Island. The fresh air, the peace and quiet.

Ahh, home sweet home.
There's No Place Like Home: Why Dan & Steph Couldn't Wait to Return Home 1What our dream team faced in Sydney was the total opposite. In fact, as soon as they started their daily #riseandshine it was time to hustle… and bustle. Picture planes, trains and automobiles. Plus trucks and some road works for good measure. The smells, the sites – the noise! There was always noise…

“Our daily 12-kilometer walk at 5am set the pace for the day and every day when you live in that environment it’s tough….it will chew you up and spit you out.

We had to get on with it, deal with what’s around us, the experiences that challenged us every day – knowing we will be home to paradise and our family very soon.”

Whilst on the show, Dan & Steph loved to brag about the Fraser Coast, about the local produce it delivers, the lifestyle, the community – the ocean! The sights and smells of the sea.

“We were really missing home. We are so proud of the Fraser Coast – it’s been home for both of us for almost 30 years! Growing up here we both have very fond memories of just being a kid with our families and friends, the same we want our daughter, Emmy to have in years to come.

In Sydney, if we ever got a day off, we would have to travel 30-minutes or jump on a hire bike or walk to be by the sea. At home, we live a 5-minute drive to the beach, we work on the Esplanade daily – it’s a daily fix we take for granted.”

And the sort of things they were looking forward to most coming home?

Going to the beach and building sandcastles with Emmy.
Fun fact: Hervey Bay boasts some of the calmest, safest beaches in Australia, thanks to Fraser Island which provides shelter from rough surf and currents. The pristine waters are the perfect place for the kiddies to play and for mum and dad to sit back and relax.

Going fishing at the Urangan Pier
Fun fact: One of the largest piers in Australia at 868-meters long, the Urangan Pier is the perfect place to cast a line.

Having a splash at Westside Water Park
Did you know? Wetside Water Park was voted by TripAdvisor in 2019 as Australia’s #1 Amusement Park/Water Park and amongst the top ten Water Parks in the world.

Taking Emmy to the many parks
Note: Queens Park in Maryborough, and All Abilities Park in Hervey Bay for the big kiddies.

Book a getaway to Fraser Island for a weekend
Voted by Vogue Australia as one of the most beautiful places in Australia.

Go wander through the Maryborough Markets and pick up some fresh local produce direct from the farmer

“These things made us happy, made us proud, made us strive to do the best we can and shout from the rooftops – how bloody amazing the Fraser Coast is! To live here we are blessed, #HolidayHereThisYear and we’ll see you as a resident too soon after!”
