It’s a haven for 4WDing, a mecca for unique, native wildlife, and home to some of Australia’s most sought-after swimming spots (did somebody say Lake McKenzie?). But there are many ways to stay and see the world’s largest sand island, and accommodation options to suit every budget and style. So without further ado, it’s time we unpack your home away from home on K’gari…
The first resort
Want to bring more of the creature comforts of home with you? Because look, just because you’re travelling to a remote sand island off the Queensland coast, it doesn’t mean you have to go without. For those looking for something a little more #fancy, let us introduce to you the award-winning Kingfisher Bay Resort.
Nestled within the remote, western beaches of the island, Kingfisher Bay Resort is your one-stop shop to adventure, relaxation, and good ol’ family fun on Fraser Island. From Standard Resort Rooms, to a Three Bedroom Spa Villa and an assortment of Holiday Houses and Wilderness Lodges, there truly is something for everyone, no matter who you’re travelling with. Throw in a resort pool, day spa, multiple bars and dining options, cultural experiences, Segway tours, Sea Explorer Cruises, Beauty Spots 4WD Tours, as well as a range of kid’s activities (did we mention the day spa?) – and you’ve got yourself one hell of a ticket to paradise. If you’re looking for adventure, but maybe you’re a bit short on time, or you simply want to be a bit closer to the action, a stay at Eurong Beach Resort on the eastern beaches sounds like it would be right up your alley. A coffee rock’s throw away from 75 Mile Beach, this secure, dingo-fenced resort with 124-hotel units and self-contained apartments has all the bells and whistles you’ll need for an epic getaway with the crew. Facilities include a pool, tennis courts, BBQ and laundry facilities, as well as a petrol station, Bottle Shop, General Store, and a Bakery with the self-proclaimed “best bread for 75-Miles”. Give yourself a home among the red gum, with lots of wallum scrub. A paperbark or two, and some brush box too, and an ancient rainforest all growing out of sand. Spend some time in Butchulla Country, and reconnect with some of the best sights nature has to offer.
Whether you are a bit of a glamper or completely self-contained, there are campgrounds on K’gari suited to make sure everyone stays a happy camper. Divided into several zones, with 45 camping areas in total, there are sites with toilet and shower facilities, as well as dingo-fenced areas like our mates over at Cathedrals on Fraser for those travelling with children under 16 years old.
Being a National Park, there are a few things you’ll need to do, before hammering in your tent pegs and rolling out your swag, including organising your permit fees, park fees, as well as familiarising yourself with the general do’s and don’t’s of the island. It’s noice, it’s different, it’s unusual
It is the year to #holidayherethisyear after all, so why not make the most of it and try bareboat sailing for something a little out of the ordinary. The crew at Fraser Island Boat Charters and Sweet Escape Yacht Charters are here to help you set sail for what shorely must be the most intimate way to explore to K’gari.
Onboard your own private, luxury catamaran, you along with 5-11 of your best mates can explore the world’s largest sand island at your own pace and leisure. Both crews offer bareboat (no license required!) or fully skippered charters, depending on how much or as little you want to do. Once you set sail, you’re free to explore the Great Sandy Straits to your heart’s content, ticking off Pelican Bank and Big Woody Island as you go, before anchoring up for the night at some of the western beaches best-kept secrets; Wathumba Creek, Moon Point and Rooney’s Point.
Whether you are looking for day of family fun, or a 3-night getaway with your best mates, there is a package on offer to suit every itinerary. And for the adrenaline junkies? Diving Packages and Fishing Charters (we’re talking Black Marlin and Longtail Tuna) are also available… because when in paradise! Find out more
