Renowned as the home of the humpback whales during the months of July to November and as the gateway to Fraser Island, the Fraser Coast is also the home of Australian fishing.

Rivers, creeks, foreshores, rock groynes and some fantastic fishing spots only minutes by boat from the Urangan Harbour make Hervey Bay the perfect holiday destination for the keen angler.

Our ocean forms a meeting place for warm northern and cooler southern ocean currents, bringing with them double the species found elsewhere.

The Great Sandy Strait - between Fraser Island and the mainland - provides one of Australia's largest seagrass beds to act as a nursery for many larger fish species, and a feeding ground for prawns and fish.

Add to this mix the protection of Fraser Island from prevailing winds and the result is some of the world's most ideal fishing conditions to suit every angler. The choice of fishing is just as impressive, with some of the best sport and game, sheltered beach and deep sea fishing to be found in Australia.

The world class fishing is not just limited to those with boats; the Hervey Bay foreshore produces good numbers of fish in season. And unlike the beach fishing paradise of Fraser Island's eastern coast, Hervey Bay has no surf to contend with, making the beach a prime fishing destination for families.

Anglers fish the foreshores for the tasty whiting during spring and summer. Local worms and yabbies are top baits. The long and bustling esplanade, littered with cafes, restaurants and accommodation, can be fished with considerable success during the early morning and late afternoon, though fishing during the night will sometimes be the best for chasing the bigger fish.

But don't just take our word for how great the fishing is. Grab your fishing gear and find out for yourself. A word of warning though - you'll be hooked!

Fishing Hot Spots

  • Fraser Island: World Heritage-listed Fraser Island offers some of the beach fishing in the world. Be it fishing off 75 Mile Beach, at Sandy Cape, Orchid Beach or off the western side jetty, Fraser offers a diverse range of fish species including whiting, dart, tailor and jewfish.
  • Platypus Bay: Located on the northwestern coast of Fraser Island, Platypus Bay is a prime fishing location offering a huge variety of reef and pelagic fish species for 12 months of the year. The best conditions are generally between April and July.  You can also try your luck at the iconic sport fish, the black marlin.
  • Rooney Point: Near the northern point of Fraser Island, provides the perfect spot for flats and fly fishermen. Anglers can easily spot their targets in crystal clear waters of only 6 feet in depth. Rooney is accessibly all year round and also provides one of the few places in the world where black marlin can be caught while sight casting on the fly.
  • The Great Sandy Strait offers a maze of sandbanks, estuaries, and reefs providing a huge variety of fish species to target in both fresh and salt water. The strait is home to a wide variety of reef and pelagic fish species but anglers can also encounter flathead, threadfin salmon and the legendary barramundi.
  • Toogoom: A haven for many species including flathead, bream, snapper, tailor, summer and winter whiting, mangrove jacks and queen fish. Explore Beelbi Creek for crabbing.
  • Burrum Heads: The calm blue waters of this popular seaside village provides an excellent place to fish from the beach, a boat or from the foreshore. Catch mackerel out from the mouth of the Burrum River.
  • The Mary River: The Mary offers anglers a sheleted and completely different fishing experience with a diverse range of fish species available all year round. From Beaver Rock right through to the mouth of the Mary River at River Heads, the Mary provides good numbers of bream, threadfin salmon, bass, cod and barramundi.
  • Lake Lenthall: Built in 1984, Lake Lenthall is situated half-way between Maryborough and Torbanlea along the Bruce Highway. It's a superb location for anglers with smaller vessels, and is proving to be popular for fly-fishing anglers chasing a variety of popular freshwater species.
