Hinterland and Beyond
A great place to begin your journey of the Fraser Coast Hinterland is the facinating city of Maryborough. Rich in heritage and culture, Maryborough is a city where heritage comes alive. Amble along old time streets, visit the birth place of the author of Mary Poppins, visit one of Australia's original main ports from the 1800's or take part in a quirky tour of this old time city.
Southern hinterland townships of Tiaro and Bauple are alive with art, history and some of Mother Nature’s most tranquil natural beauty. The magnificent Mary River is home to rare turtle and ancient lungfish species and Bauple is where the first “bopple” (Macadamia) nut trees were discovered by the local aboriginals. Visit historical Gympie or ride the Valley Rattler through the beautiful Mary Valley.
On the western rim of the Fraser Coast Hinterland lies the district of Woocoo, the aboriginal name for echidna. This is the heart of cattle country, set amoung rolling green countryside, rugged bushland and massive granite outcrops. Even further west lies the small townships of Kilkivan, Moffatdale, Goomeri and Murgon - hidden gems where restaurants, eateries and wineries dot the verdant landscape.
North are the bustling rural and historic townships of Childers and Apple Tree Creek, fascinating places to stroll around or visit the local wines and cafes and sample local produce, even famous homemade ice-cream.
